埼玉大学理学部HiSEP(平成24年度文科省理数学生育成支援事業)では以下の特別セミナーを開催します。

For years bacteria have been considered as non-intelligent organisms that could not auto-govern their behavior beyond the mere response to environmental stimuli such as fluctuations in temperature, light or nutrient concentration. Now we know that bacteria have evolved elaborated communication mechanisms that allow them to act coordinately by sensing the presence of other bacterial fellows. Bacteria communicate using small chemicals called autoinducers, which control many important biological functions such as: antibiotic biosynthesis, virulence, plasmid conjugal transfer, swarming, endospores formation or biofilm differentiation, in a process known as quorum sensing. Due to the importance of bacterial Quorum Sensing, eukaryotic organisms and other bacteria have developed ways to interfere with bacterial conversations, a process generally termed as quorum quenching. This lecture will review the different languages developed by bacteria and how they were discovered, as well as the quorum quenching strategies that have been created as defensive weapon by other organisms.
